Bronchoscopy Procedure
Definition :- Bronchoscopy is the examination of the bronchi (the main airways of the lungs) using a flexible tube (bronchoscope).
Purpose :-
Bronchoscopy is performed under anesthesia and helps to evaluate and diagnose lung problems, assess blockages, obtain samples of tissue / fluid /or to help remove a foreign body.
Bronchoscopy may use a biopsy
Pre- procedure protocol
It patients must not eat before 8-12 hours to bronchoscopy procedure to decrease risk aspiration of stomach content during procedure.
Procedure
Patients are frequently pre medicated with atropine (to minimize oral secretions and bronchospasms), morphine (for analgesia and cough suppression), and diazepam (for sedation), and lidocaine for local anesthesia.
This procedure is done both in operating room or bronchoscopy suite.
Position-
Flexible bronchoscopy is usually performed with supine or semi-recumbent position and which of patient posture is effective is not clear.
Supine position during bronchoscopy can cause aspirates oral secretion.
Patients in lateral position can flow out oral secretion naturally.
Equipment - bronchoscope
mostly performed by passing a flexible fiber-optic tube by through the nose or mouth down the trachea to the bronchi.
Each lung visualized independently each bronchi all segmental and subsegmental bronchi.
Samples of lung tissue and cultures can be obtained infection present.

bronchoscopy can cause complications like hypoxia & post bronchoscopy pneumonia.
completion of the bronchoscopy, you will remain in a recovery area with nasal OXYGEN running until you are fully awake and your gag reflex has returned.
patient have sedated, so can not drive
doctor always instruct you any symptoms to report fever for 12-24 hours post bronchoscopy.
